The Calimani Mountains belong to the Harghita-Gurghiu-Calimani-Tibles-Gutai-Oas volcanic chain and are the youngest mountains in Romania (1.8-5 million years) with a unique landscape shaped by the erosion process resulting in zoomorphic rocks, strange ones present especially on the southern and eastern flanks and which constitute points of tourist attraction. The highest altitudes, over 2000m, are on the main ridge, in the peaks: Pietrosul Calimani- 2102 m, Negoiul Unguresc-2081 m, Iezerul Calimanului- 2031 m, Retitis- 2021 m, Calimanul Cerbului 2013 m. On the territory of UAT Toplita , the highest altitudes in the Calimani Mountains are found on the northwest border of the administrative territory, respectively the Iezerul Calimanului and Retitis peaks. The natural potential of the Calimans, with its scientific value and special landscape, constitutes an important tourist destination, being among the most visited mountains in Romania.

The Calimani National Park with a total area of ​​24,040 ha (of which 1224 ha are in the territory of the municipality of Toplita), is a protected area of ​​national interest in the territory of which an impressive number of plant and animal species can be found. The purpose of its establishment is to protect and preserve elements of nature with special physical-geographical, floristic and speleological value and not only that.
