About Fundatura Ponorului Trail

This is a moderate trail, accessible to everyone, that leads to Fundătura Ponorului – the idyllic place in Romania sought by mountaineers, casual hikers and photographers alike.
The hiking route is organized as a thematic road with 6 informative panels, officially known as “Karstic relief from the Șureanu Mountains”. It can be walked or cycled along the driveway.

Ponorului’s End or God’s Palm, as the place was called for its unreal, almost fairy-tale beauty, can be considered a unique place in Romania. At the end of the trail, the traveler will discover a vast plateau, crossed by the Ponor stream, scattered from place to place with isolated households and haystacks collected by the locals from the green meadows. The area is, in fact, a karst depression located at 900 meters, formed by the waters of the Ponorului valley, which also dug into the Jurassic limestones forming the photogenic rock ensembles of Fundatura. Ponorului Valley stretches for 9 kilometers.

In the rainy season, the waters come out of the earth, sometimes flooding the plateau, and in the winter it freezes, forming large portions of the ice rink.

With a little care, the Dead End can be camped. Locals – if you see them – can offer water, cheese and sometimes a hot meal.
