About The treasures of Agighiol – Dobrogea Chimerică Geopark Trail

Located in a nature reserve in the Natura 2000 site ROSCI0060 Dealurile Agighiolului, the path takes us on a fascinating journey through landscapes of rare beauty and reveals the natural and historical treasures of this area.

We invite you to travel in 3 hours a history of 250 million years that began in the Triassic, on Pietros Hill, Tulcea county.

We discover how a simple fossil can reveal the course of the history of life on Earth; we follow the footsteps of the Agighiol Treasury and learn the story of the Getic helmet from the 4th century BC; we follow the story of the delicate flowers that seem to grow from limestone, but also of the animals for which Pietros Hill is home.

What could surprise us as small or big explorers?

  • Triassic limestones and their formation process;
  • the Pontic steppe habitat, unique in Romania;
  • the peony glade and the orchids of the forest;
  • four species protected by law: the Dobrogean bluebell (Campanula romanica), the Dobrogean tortoise (Testudo graeca ibera), the shrike (Spermophilus citellus) and the Dobrogean hamster (Mesocricetus newtoni).
    Explorers of the trail can then descend to Lake Razim, the largest lake in Romania, thus reaching the south of the Danube Delta.

the treasures of Agighiol are developed in partnership with the Romanian Ecotourism Association – Discover Eco-Romania, the Dobrogea Chimerica Geopark, the GeoD Association, the National Agency for Protected Natural Areas and the Valea Nucarilor Town Hall.
