First of all, you need to pick a location either in the city or outside the city, but it has to be a location with various urban architectural pieces available for study. Once you picked the location, you must choose some of these pieces (they can also be objects, like a bench, a statue, even a fence or something you can find on the playground usually, like a slide) and try to stick to more than three (this is a good training for the memory also).
You need to take with you something that helps you measure (measuring tape) and something that helps you draw the shapes of the objects you find there. It can be just colored chalk and you can use the sidewalk or any available surface. Remember getting creative is good!
After you chose the objects you want to study with your group, you need to measure them properly (ask the children to help you, of course) and then establish what shape do they have (more like a circle or a triangle, a square or maybe a cube). Children will learn basic concepts about how objects are built and also how they relate to the environment.
If you are in the park or at the playground, make sure to engage more children, as this Adventure is more fun with many participants. Ask them to make teams and measure correctly their chosen objects.
You will need paper and pens, also one big(or even giant:)surface where you will put the whole map of the place together. You can also do all the drawings on the sidewalk, using colored chalk.
This adventure helps children to better understand how important cooperation is, in any project we have to accomplish. Children need to "work" together in order to achieve their goal...But what is the goal? I forgot to mention it:) The goal is to create a map of that place, made up only by the shapes and measurements children have made. After each team finishes their work, all teams must put together information they gather and make a big giant map of the place. The hack is that each team must do their part (measurements) separately and only after all objects are mapped, the giant map is put together. At the end of the adventure, the whole team must pick a person that does not participate into the game and ask them to guess which object is what, just by looking at the map. If they succeed, then the goal is considered achieved!
Our advice is to take this adventure outside, maybe in a city park or some area around the city, where you have lots of urban pieces to measure and study. You can aswell have fun in your backyard, measuring all the garden fences or even the length of the shovel. As long as you pick up significant objects from that location, you should be able to create a beautiful map and experience.
Besides the usual outdoor equipment, you don't need anything extra in order to enjoy this adventure. Make sure you have a rain coat with you, so you don't get caught by surprise. Before you pick a location, check if there are any restrictions in the area or rules that you have to follow.
